Media and democracy: Social Responsibility Theory
Keywords:
Communication theory, Normative theories, Media system, model, Social responsibilityAbstract
The dispute on the type of democracy is what lies under the academic study, of a normative nature, on the role of media in society. An example of it is the Theory on Social Responsibility, expressed at its best in the works of the Hutchins Commission. It came to compel the media enterprises, as well as government and public in general, to accept conscientiously their role in society, and to assume a number of principles which would correct the unfocused exercise of free press, and limit the social unbalance that could arise from it.
