Purpose. This study maps research on videogames and journalism, situated at the intersection of these fields, with the aim of identifying the geographical distribution of scholarly output, international collaboration networks, shared concepts and emerging thematic areas. Methodology. A scoping review was conducted using the SALSA approach, based on a search of Web of Science and Scopus covering the period 1995–2025. After removing duplicates and irrelevant documents, a corpus of 150 documents comprising scientific articles, books and book chapters was analysed. Results and conclusions. The analysis reveals a concentration of research output in Europe and North America, led by Spain and the United States, alongside a predominance of North–North links and limited North–South and South–South academic cooperation. The co-occurrence of keywords reveals six thematic clusters/axes: newsgames as a new journalistic genre; industry, ethics and women’s empowerment; social media and the media; methodological exploration; disinformation and media literacy; and gamification and innovation. It is concluded that the field has been growing strongly since 2010, although geographical, methodological and ethical gaps remain, opening up opportunities for research and production in the Global South. Original contributions. The study systematises the link between video games and journalism from a bibliometric and thematic perspective, presenting video games as both the subject of journalistic coverage and an interactive format for reporting, explaining and gamifying current affairs content. This dual perspective reveals an educational, experimental and innovative dimension, as well as its potential for addressing public issues and new forms of journalistic storytelling.
